binascii - illegal character

This is a program which convert a plaintext into a ciphertext using the DES algorithm. And I run into an issue that I was unable to convert the plaintext into binary code using the module binascii. It says illegal character but I don't know why as my test string is all ASCII characters. Here is my code:

I know there are a lot of bugs but please don't focus on them yet as I haven't debugged my program.
